How Much Do Built-In Wardrobes Cost in Australia?
One of the most common questions we get at Fox is: “How much should a built-in wardrobe actually cost?”
The honest answer? It depends on the size, layout, finishes and how customised you want the space to be. A simple robe can be quite affordable, while a fully customised walk-in with premium finishes and lighting can become a serious feature in the home.
In Australia, most professionally installed built-in wardrobes generally fall somewhere between $2,000 and $10,000+, depending on the scope of the project.
Here’s a rough guide to what you can expect.

Wardrobe Pricing at a Glance
From simple and functional to fully custom – here's what each level typically includes.

Affordable Built-In Wardrobes
Approx. $2,500 – $5,000
This is usually a more straightforward setup using standard materials and layouts.
Typically includes:
- Basic melamine internals
- Standard shelving and hanging rails
- Sliding doors
- Simple white finishes
These wardrobes are great for rooms with not a lot of room around the bed, spare rooms, kids’ rooms, investment properties or anyone wanting a clean and functional storage solution without all the extras.

Mid-Range Custom Wardrobes
Approx. $5,000 – $10,000
This is where most custom wardrobes sit — and where you start to see a huge jump in both functionality and overall look.
Often includes:
- Custom internal layouts
- Soft-close drawers (Fox only use soft close)
- Better quality board finishes
- Mirror, shaker or polyurethane doors
- Extra shelving and storage zones
- Better use of awkward spaces
- Full carcass construction for longevity and durability
At Fox, this is generally the sweet spot for homeowners wanting something that looks beautiful while still being practical for everyday life.

Premium Walk-In Wardrobes
Approx. $10,000 – $15,000+
Premium wardrobes are highly customised spaces designed to feel more like luxury cabinetry than simply storage.
These can include:
- Full walk-in robe fit outs
- Custom lighting
- Glass display sections
- Jewellery drawers and accessories
- Polyurethane or timber-look finishes
- Integrated makeup stations or seating
- Floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry
- Full carcass construction for longevity and durability
The final cost depends heavily on size, finishes and complexity — especially in larger homes or architecturally designed spaces.
What Impacts the Cost of a Wardrobe?
A custom wardrobe isn't a one-size-fits-all product – and neither is the price, so here's what to know before you start planning.

1. Size of the Wardrobe
This is the biggest factor. A small 2-metre robe costs significantly less than a full walk-in room with multiple cabinetry walls.

2. Door Style
Different door styles can dramatically affect pricing.
Generally:
- Sliding doors are usually more affordable and great for rooms without much space to open doors
- Hinged doors often cost more but provide better access
- Shaker, routed or polyurethane doors increase cost

3. Internal Fit-Out
A wardrobe with only shelves and hanging space will naturally cost less than one packed with:
- drawers
- shoe storage
- pull-out accessories
- jewellery inserts
- trouser racks
- lighting
- custom sections
The more customised the internals, the more labour and cabinetry involved.

4. Materials & Hardware
Not all wardrobes are built the same.
At Fox, we use quality materials like:
- Polytec HMR (high moisture resistant) board (always used by Fox as our standard board)
- BLUM soft-close hardware – Fox uses additional hinges for better long-term support and durability. Where some companies may use only 2 hinges on a standard door, Fox uses 3, and on taller doors Fox typically uses 5 hinges instead of 3 to help prevent sagging over time.
- Australian made products wherever possible, for glass and aluminium.
Better materials and hardware may cost more upfront, but they make a huge difference to durability, finish quality and how the wardrobe performs long term.
Why Sydney families choose Fox Wardrobes
Flat-pack wardrobes can be a more affordable option upfront, particularly for basic storage solutions not requiring custom sizing. However, it’s important to consider what is included in the price. Once installation costs are added – especially if you are unable to install the wardrobe yourself – the overall cost can become much closer to that of a professionally designed and custom-fitted wardrobe.
Custom cabinetry offers:
1
Better space utilisation
2
Higher quality finishes
3
Stronger materials
4
Professional installation
5
Tailored storage solutions
6
Improved resale appeal
For many homeowners, the long-term value and functionality make custom wardrobes well worth the investment.
